The board has been keeping score in silence for a week, but no longer! Welcome to the daily dispatch — what happened, who moved, what landed on the wall, and what to watch before bed (or, in the Commissioner's case, well after it).

🌍 On the pitch

🇰🇷 Mexico 1–0 South Korea — Miles stayed up for this one, and was totally right to do so. Korea matched Mexico for long stretches in front of an enthusiastic crowd in Guadalajara, then lost it with a goalkeeping wobble just after the break; Luis Romo pouncing on the 50th minute, and that was the whole game. Mexico become the first team into the Round of 32 and win Group A.

But Korea is not out. Second place, three points, one match to play. The dream is bruised, not buried. 화이팅. 🇰🇷

Around the family:

  • 🇨🇿 Czechia 1–1 South Africa — Grandma Laurie's side digs out a point and stays alive on one. Survival is its own art form.
  • 🇧🇦 Bosnia 1–4 Switzerland — Nicole, we salute the first half. We have erased the rest from the record.

Around the grounds (purely for the spectacle):

  • 🇨🇦 Canada 6–0 Qatar — the co-hosts are emphatically not here to make friends, Bonus: first grisly injury of the tournament with an audibly broken leg.
  • 🏴 England 4–2 Croatia — six goals, no defending, gloriously stupid fun.

Later today: 🇺🇸 USA vs Australia, 3:00 PM ET. Not an official pick, but it's the USA, and we contain multitudes. We also got some thematically appropriate red white and blue gummy nerds clusters.

📊 On the board — state of the union

Since this is the first dispatch, here's where we stand before today's whistles:

# Player Country Total
1 👑 Miles South Korea 39
2 Kit Türkiye 20
3 Aunt Jamie Scotland 18
4 Auntie Elena Belgium 11
5 Nicole Bosnia & Herzegovina 11
6 Cats France 9
7 Grandma Laurie Czechia 8
8 Jason Netherlands 7
9 Grandpa Tom New Zealand 1
10 Mikaela & Will Morocco 1

Miles is lapping the field, almost entirely due to bonus points. Fanart, a player adoption, Korean snacks, late-night Q&A productions, and he's only growing bigger and stronger as time goes on (literally, he's started wearing my old running shoes). The match points across the whole table are still a rounding error; the wall is where the real game is being played right now. This is working as intended.

📐 Commissioner's Ruling: the Great Video Devaluation

Effective immediately, mini-presentations and educational videos pay +5, down from +10.

The cause is domestic and entirely self-inflicted: the Commissioner and Miles have flooded the market with History Minutes, Q&As, and explainers until videos have begun to outnumber cats in this house (which is saying something). When supply runs this hot, the currency softens — basic economics, and frankly overdue. The board already reflects the new rate, so there are no recounts and no appeals (the appeals window closed before it opened).

For the record: yes, the Commissioner currently sits in second place and is a serial video producer, which means this ruling devalues the Commissioner's own holdings. A motion to recuse was raised, considered, and overruled by the Commissioner. Sometimes you tighten policy even when it costs you.

🧵 On the wall — a week in contributions

Two dozen entries and counting, and some clear genres have emerged:

  • The educational-video industrial complex. Multiple History Minutes, explainers, and Q&As. Production values rising, runtimes mercifully shrinking.
  • Competitive player adoption. Lee Gi-hyuk, Mert Günok, Tomáš Souček, and Aunt Jamie's two picks
  • Food diplomacy. Biskrem ordered in quantities that imply a bunker, a haul of Korean snacks, and so much more to come!
  • Honorable mentions: Nicole's deep-cut Bosnian World Cup anthem, and the Canine Cheering Squad reporting for duty.

Keep them coming. Good-faith effort = +5!

📅 Up next — civil war

  • 🏴 vs 🇲🇦 Scotland–Morocco — TONIGHT, 6:00 PM ET. Aunt Jamie vs Mikaela & Will, same match, one set of three points on the table. The Commissioner is officially neutral (and privately anything but). Morocco are favored; Jamie has honor (and some gifted match footage) on the line. Mikaela and Will will actually be at the game and are required by law to report back on The Vibes.
  • 🇹🇷 vs 🇵🇾 Türkiye–Paraguay — TONIGHT, 11:00 PM ET. The Commissioner's own side, at an hour the Commissioner has no business being awake. Haydi Türkiye. 🇹🇷
  • 🇳🇱 vs 🇸🇪 Netherlands–Sweden — TOMORROW, 1:00 PM ET. Jason's Oranje look to get off the mark.
  • 🇧🇪 vs 🇮🇷 Belgium–Iran — SUNDAY, 3:00 PM ET. Auntie Elena's turn!

Let the matches continue. 👑
