Vol. 13 has been reviewed by the Office of the Commissioner and found to be, in technical legal language, phoned in. The Commissioner accepts full responsibility and has sentenced themselves to writing this one properly. The board is updated. Full service resumes now.

🌍 On the pitch

We have some catching up to do. The Round of 16 is complete, and it was not gentle with the family.

🇧🇪 Belgium 4–1 🇺🇸 USA — Auntie Elena over Robin, and it was not close. Robin exits the tournament the way he entered it: slowly, with dignity, and without ever submitting a single bonus. Fifteen years old, entrusted with an entire nation, and undone by some chocolates. Political nonsense aside, it's worth noting that all three hosts are now out of their own World Cup.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England 3–2 🇲🇽 Mexico — Lever's run ends, but he finishes with 19 real points, which remains one of the finest on-pitch records in the competition, achieved entirely from a tank.

🇳🇴 Norway 2–1 🇧🇷 Brazil — Haaland scored twice and Brazil went home. No family allegiances here, but the Commissioner notes that Norway has never been to a quarterfinal before, and that Brazil has now lost to a country whose entire population is smaller than São Paulo. Football!

🇪🇸 Spain 1–0 🇵🇹 Portugal — Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup ends at the hands of the neighbors. A moment of silence, and then immediately back to nonsense.

🇦🇷 Argentina 3–2 🇪🇬 Egypt — Two-nil down with eleven minutes left, and then: Romero, Messi, and an Enzo Fernández header in stoppage time. Messi now sits atop the Golden Boot with eight, one clear of Mbappé. The cats have thoughts on this, none of them positive.

🇨🇭 Switzerland 0–0 🇨🇴 Colombia (4–3 on penalties) — A hundred and twenty minutes of nothing, then Ruben Vargas sent Switzerland to their first quarterfinal since 1954. Some droughts end quietly.

📋 From the contribution wall

The off-pitch economy, as promised in Vol. 13, has been booming.

Miles (+15) — Fan art video, Korean vocab, Korean facts. A three-part portfolio deposited on the wall in rapid succession. South Korea's on-pitch campaign ended some time ago; South Korea's cultural ministry has never been busier.

Auntie Elena (+2) — South Korea and Türkiye cheering for Belgium, with appropriate snacks. Miles and Kit lent their voices and popsicles to the Belgian cause and the points route, as always, to the handler. The result (see above: 4–1) suggests the cheering worked.

Auntie Elena (+5) — Psychic cat. A cat has predicted the world cup results! Our cats are, of course, already enrolled in this competition on behalf of France, so we'll see if they make it all the way. +5.

Lever (+5) — Mexico v England game breakdown, gifted from Türkiye. The axolotl's elimination was analyzed in detail and the analysis was donated to his treasury. Lever continues to accumulate wealth he did not ask for and cannot spend.

Cats (+3) — Cheering for France. All three of them, video evidence provided.

Kit (+5) — History Minute, Part 6. The series continues! No one asked for this, and yet!

Miles, 65 👑 — the crown holds by exactly one point, sustained entirely by the wall. Three real points, sixty-two bonus. This is no longer a football campaign; it is a content empire.

Mikaela & Will, 64 — one point back, with Morocco on the pitch today. Advance, and the +5 takes the crown by scoreboard alone. No slide show required (but always welcome, hint hint).

Auntie Elena, 62 — the quiet terror of this competition. Twenty real points, a 4–1 statement win, a psychic cat, and Spain up next. Three back means Belgium advancing on Friday is worth 67 — also enough to take the throne from Miles.

Cats, 40 — the best real score on the board (24) and they face Morocco today!

Robin, 16 — eliminated. Zero bonus points. Tortoises do not make slide shows, which feels like a Bailey School Kids title in the making.

📅 The quarterfinals

Today, 4:00 PM, Boston — 🇫🇷 France vs. 🇲🇦 Morocco. The Cats vs. Mikaela & Will. If Morocco advances, the crown changes heads at the final whistle — 69 to 65, no ruling required. If France advances, the cats climb to 45 on real points alone and Miles keeps the throne another day. The Commissioner will be watching with snacks and total neutrality (Dima Maghrib!).

Friday, 3:00 PM, Los Angeles — 🇧🇪 Belgium vs. 🇪🇸 Spain. And note the stakes: if Morocco stumbles today, a Belgian win here makes it 67–65 and the crown moves to Auntie Elena. Miles must survive two attempts in two days, armed with nothing but a wall.

Saturday, 5:00 PM, Miami — 🇳🇴 Norway vs. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England. Haaland against the team that just knocked out our axolotl. The neutral's pick is obvious.

Saturday, 9:00 PM, Kansas City — 🇦🇷 Argentina vs. 🇨🇭 Switzerland. We just hope both teams have fun!

One point separates the crown from the nearest challenger, three from the next, and both of them play before the weekend is out.

Let the matches continue.
