⚽ The Dispatch, Vol. 16 — Sovereign Wealth
Saturday, 11 July 2026 · The People's World Cup · Quarterfinals
The quarterfinals are nearly complete, the on-pitch interests have been reduced to a single quadrupedal federation, and the Commissioner's household spent a few days finding Waldo. Volume numbering has been corrected in prior filings. The Office thanks no one for noticing.
🌍 On the pitch
🇪🇸 Spain 2–1 🇧🇪 Belgium — Heartbreak in Los Angeles. Belgium equalized before halftime — the first goal Spain had conceded in the entire tournament — lost their keeper to injury, and held the champions of Europe level until the 88th minute, when a spilled rebound fell to Mikel Merino and that was that. Auntie Elena exits close enough to see extra time from the doorstep.
🏴 England 2–1 🇳🇴 Norway (a.e.t.) — Billed as Kane vs. Haaland, decided by neither. Norway led through Schjelderup, Bellingham equalized before the break, and then Bellingham again. Haaland was held scoreless and substituted before the end, disappointing the Commissioner's entire instagram feed.
🖼️ Off the pitch
No bonus submissions were filed this period. The wall stands silent. The Commissioner's household, however, enters the following into the record:
Fiber arts. We have engaged with Woobles and emerged victorious. The Office now recognizes crochet as an official medium for future wall submissions, a ruling the Commissioner made in a completely neutral capacity as someone who now knows how to crochet.
The Waldo census. The downtown Middlebury Waldo hunt has been completed — all twenty stamps collected across two days, a 100% detection rate. Prizes claimed: one poster and one (1) dollar off a Waldo book, as well as entry into the Waldo lottery (the Wallottery?). Miles selected Waldo in the Spotlight and has already located multiple Waldos.
Monetary policy. The South Korean federation has established a sovereign wealth fund — that is, Miles opened a savings account while we were looking for Waldo at the bank.
The peasant market. Miles attended today's peasant market, got painted as a demon (thank goodness St Stephen's isn't a different kind of church), and proceeded to purchase two plants and a dragonfruit lemonade, which is the gentlest recorded demon activity in Vermont history. The Commissioner had a Thai tea ice cream and files no complaints.

Match catering. The England–Norway fixture was observed with jacket potatoes, beans, English cheddar, an Aero bar, and Maltesers — plus one bag of Swedish candy, purchased because the Commissioner momentarily forgot who was actually playing. Norway and Sweden are, in fact, different countries. The Office regrets the error, but not the candy.
📊 The table
No movement. Mikaela & Will hold the crown on 71. Miles sits second at 65, Auntie Elena finishes at 62.
The structural note: with Belgium's exit, every human federation has concluded its on-pitch business. The Cats (51) — now holding the best real score on the board at 29 — face Spain on Tuesday with a live path to further real points; everyone else is now working the wall or nothing.

📅 Coming up
🇦🇷 Argentina vs. 🇨🇭 Switzerland — Tonight, 9:00 PM, Kansas City. The final quarterfinal. Miles is cheering for Messi — not Argentina, Messi specifically.
🇫🇷 France vs. 🇪🇸 Spain — Tuesday, semifinal. The Cats, one match from a World Cup final. Clear your calendars; the cheese board is already under guard.
🏴 England vs. tonight's winner — the other semifinal follows, I don't know, the cats aren't involved.
Three quarterfinals settled, one more to play tonight, and the only family boots left on the pitch fit over sharp, sharp claws.
Let the matches continue.
