⚽ The Dispatch, Vol. 7 — The Paper Crown
Thursday, 25 June 2026 · The People's World Cup · Group Stage
Five family sides closed out their groups last night, and the crown holder's team lost. South Korea managed three points and a long flight's worth of heartbreak — and Miles has never led by more.
Read his board line and it's obvious: the crown is not made of football. It is made of everything else – the drawings, the facts, the videos, the showing up. A paper crown, technically. But paper holds, it's his, and last night it somehow got heavier while his team got lighter. The metaphor gets away, but you get the idea. Who knows what will happen next, I certainly don't!
🌍 On the pitch
The five finales, and the family was everywhere:
- 🇲🇦 Morocco 4–2 Haiti — Mikaela & Will. Morocco finish second in the group and march into the Round of 32 — the only side doing this the hard way: on the actual grass.
- 🇧🇦 Bosnia 3–1 Qatar — Nicole. The math had written them off; the Zmajevi declined to read it. A win in Seattle, a teenage spark named Alajbegović, and Bosnia squeak through as the first qualifying third-place team. The heart's team is through.
- 🏴 Scotland 0–3 Brazil — Aunt Jamie. The Tartan Army out-sang everyone; Vinícius out-scored them. Third place, fate pending.
- 🇨🇿 Czechia 0–3 Mexico — Grandma Laurie. The Azteca has never lost a World Cup match and did not intend to start. Ochoa went up in the air; Czechia went out.
- 🇰🇷 South Korea 0–1 South Africa — Miles. Sixty-one percent of the ball, zero of the goals. Maseko's strike sent Bafana Bafana through for the first time ever and South Korea to the waiting room.

Rulings from the chair:
Miles, 50 — three football points, and Miles earned the other forty-seven. The most commanding lead of the tournament. His team is in the long-shot waiting room and his crown has never sat higher. The paper crown holds.
Mikaela & Will, 42 — and the only manager whose surge is mostly football. Real 12: a group survived, the Round of 32 booked, points earned on grass.
Kit, 41 — your Commissioner medals in third on a Real of zero. I will not be taking questions.
Jason, 37 — climbing on an economy denominated by Dutch animals.
Down the table, a flurry of contributions kept the wall busy — Auntie Elena, Grandma Laurie, and Nicole all chipping in, much rejoicing — and Nicole's Bosnia rode a real win up to a share of 19. Grandpa Tom remains, serenely, on one.
(And yes — the Commissioner stays unreasonably proud of the most recent History Minute, Ep. 5 — El Manatí Rubber Balls — which is part of why that bonus column looks the way it does. The franchise lives, retirement notwithstanding.)
🎧 From the Commissioner's Spotify
The Commissioner has spent the week grinding billable hours to an embarrassing-yet-effective pump-up playlist, the full contents of which will not be disclosed under any circumstances. One name on it, however, can be recommended without shame: Sabaton. We've been fans for years (saw them live back in the day, it was great!) and it turns out a catalog of historical battles is the ideal soundtrack to current soccer ones. They're also genuinely excellent historians, truly History Minute hashtag goals.
📅 Up next
The group stage isn't finished with us yet, and the knockouts are already forming:
- Tonight — 🇳🇱 Netherlands vs Tunisia, 7:00 PM ET. Jason's Dutch close out Group F, chasing top spot. 🇹🇷 Türkiye vs USA, 10:00 PM ET. The Commissioner's eliminated side plays for pride.
- Friday — 🇫🇷 France vs Norway, 3:00 PM ET. The cats are already through; this one's for seeding.
- Saturday — 🇧🇪 Belgium vs 🇳🇿 New Zealand. A genuine family civil war. Auntie Elena needs the win to advance.
And the Round of 32 takes shape: Morocco (Mikaela & Will) draw the Group F winner on Monday in Monterrey — which, if the Dutch top their group tonight, means Mikaela & Will vs Jason. Bosnia (Nicole) likely meets the USA. Miles and Aunt Jamie wait on the third-place math, which sorts itself out over the next few days.
The forecast remains dead. The crown remains paper. The Commissioner remains on a deadline IRL.
Let the matches continue. 👑
