For seven volumes the crown sat on one head, this morning it sits on another (for at least a brief minute). Jason's Netherlands closed the group stage 3–1, finished top of Group F, and passed Miles by a single point. Fifty-one to fifty. The width of one cheer.

🌍 On the pitch

Two of ours closed out the group stage under the lights:

• 🇳🇱 Netherlands 3–1 Tunisia — Jason. Clean and done: three of theirs, one back, top of Group F and into the Round of 32.
• 🇹🇷 Türkiye 3–2 USA — Kit. The Commissioner's eliminated side played for pride and found three goals of it. A corpse that wins 3–2 is still a corpse — but it is a corpse that ruined an entire group-stage evening. How's that for a mental image!

Rulings from the chair:

Jason, 51 — the new crown, and earned on both fronts at once: a win and a group topped on the grass, an SCP file on the wall that was, the Commissioner will say plainly, A+ content. Note for the record — his Real of 12 is exactly level with Morocco's 12, which means the two sides drawn against each other Monday arrive tied on the football. The bracket continues to write better than I do.

Miles, 50 — dethroned by a single point and not one bit diminished. The crown didn't leave because Miles slipped; it left because someone out-cheered him by a hair, and his 47 bonus is still the largest soul on this board and the reason any of this exists.

Kit, 44 — bronze, Türkiye's win duly logged, and — full disclosure from the chair — I have not yet awarded myself the cheer I absolutely earned by staying up way past my bedtime to watch until the last minute. The Commissioner is behind on the Commissioner's paperwork.

Cats, 24 — France's largest and most decorated boy, modeling the away kit:

The official wall citation reads "for being Good Sports about whatever this is," which undersells the auteur behind it.

The TCG is live. Forty-eight nations, a type chart, a weather deck that turns on you mid-match, an approach dial that makes you commit to a temperament before the d20 commits for you — and a d20 that does not care. Bring the right nation into the right matchup and the dice reward you; bring the wrong one and they reward you anyway, just not toward the result you pictured. Working as designed. Go pull a card. 🎴

The group stage exhales; two family civil wars load into the chamber.

• Today — 🇫🇷 France vs Norway, 3:00 PM ET. The cats are already through and playing strictly for seeding, which is exactly the energy they bring to most obligations.
• Saturday — 🇧🇪 Belgium vs 🇳🇿 New Zealand. Civil war the first. Auntie Elena needs the result to advance; Grandpa Tom needs only to be inconvenient.

And the Round of 32 is set where it counts:
